Your home has a high level of radon gas.
If your home has been found to have high levels of radon gas, there is no need to worry. A simple and economical installation can reduce your radon exposure in as little as one day. If you are selling your home, the radon test will need to show that the radon levels in your home are below 4.0 picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L). 4.0 picoCuries per Liter is the action point for USEPA. However, there is no " safe" level of radon and the USEPA recommends that treatment should be considered if the radon levels are shown to be between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L. The World Health organization recommends taking action at above 2.7 pCi/L. The World Health Organization lower their action point in 2010. The USEPA action point is from approximately thirty years ago.
A variety of methods can be used to reduce radon gas in homes. Sealing cracks and other openings in the basement is a basic part of most approaches to radon mitigation. It should be noted however, that sealing is not a complete method of radon control, sealing alone is not recommended by the USEPA.Unfortunately, you cannot seal radon gas out of the home using special paints or other sealant products advertised to reduce radon. This method has not been shown to lower radon levels significantly or consistently by itself.
In most cases, basic sealing is combined with an active mitigation system comprised of pipe run through a small hole in the basement floor, through which radon gas is vented to the outside with the assistance of a fan. Such systems are called "sub-slab depressurization systems" and do not require major changes to your home. These systems constantly exhaust radon gas, thus preventing it from entering your home from below the concrete floor and the foundation. Similar systems can also be installed in homes with crawl spaces. The type of radon mitigation system used to control the radon gas in your home may differ based on the design of your home, and other factors. A radon mitigation system is easily installed by us and easy for you to maintain, and does not detract from the aesthetics of your home.
